Sunderland showed an interest in signing former Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita during the summer transfer window, according to Ed Aarons.

The Guardian journalist shared via his personal X account [3 September] that Keita is now in talks with Istanbul Basaksehir over a possible move.

Sunderland are said to have attempted to sign the Werder Bremen ace, but they were unable to agree terms.

Sunderland get lucky escape with Naby Keita transfer news

Keita is best known around these parts for his injury-plagued spell at Liverpool, and any move for a player of that ilk comes with red flags.

The Guinea midfielder's fortunes do not appear to have got any better over in Germany, as he played just 107 minutes of Bundesliga action last term.

Quite why Sunderland were considering a move for Keita beyond his name alone is a strange one to comprehend.

Regis Le Bris has done superbly with what he has available to him, with the Black Cats sitting top of the Championship with four wins from four.

Bringing in Keita would have been exciting on the face of it, but he realistically would not have been able to get a consistent run in the side.

Sunderland supporters should instead be happy with what they have. Big-name signings can wait until the club are back in the Premier League.
