Sunderland will finish fifth come the end of the regular Championship season, according to Opta Analyst.

The stats-based website's supercomputer has given the Black Cats a predicted final points tally of around 72.

That would see Sunderland claim a spot in the play-offs, where the current projections have them to face Middlesbrough in the semi-finals.

Leeds United and West Brom are tipped to finish in the two automatic spots, while Burnley and Sheffield United complete the top six.

Sunderland must target Championship play-offs

Four games into the new league season is far too early to make any sweeping judgements, of course, but the signs are certainly bright for Sunderland.

Regis Le Bris' men have so far beaten Cardiff City, Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley and most recently Portsmouth.

Not only that, they have scored 20 goals and conceded just once - a consolation goal from Luke O'Nien at Fratton Park three days ago.

According to Opta Analyst, Sunderland have just under a 39-per-cent likelihood of finishing in the play-offs come May.

For those wanting even more, they have a five per cent chance of winning the title and going up to the Premier League automatically.

Le Bris will rightly continue to take it one game at a time, with a trip to Plymouth Argyle next up after the international break, but that does not stop supporters from wondering exactly what is possible.
