Sunderland transfer state of play: Done deals and what to expect before window shuts

Sunderland have been one of the busiest clubs in the summer transfer window following their promotion to the Premier League, and more business could still take place.

The Black Cats achieved a somewhat unexpected promotion from the Championship, and changed their fortunes completely as they have a new-look squad.

Sunderland have invested heavily in the transfer market, spending over £100 million in what has been their busiest window in history.

Several players from last season’s promotion squad have left, but a whole new team has arrived for Regis Le Bris as he aims to keep them in the Premier League.

Who have Sunderland bought and sold so far this summer?

Sunderland have strengthened every position on the pitch, but have also sold some of the players key to their promotion, including playoff final hero Tommy Watson.

Jobe Bellingham departed for a club-record fee as he followed his brother’s path to Borussia Dortmund, but it’s safe to say Sunderland replaced him well, with Granit Xhaka a high-level arrival.

A lot of players have arrived at the Stadium of Light, and while ambitious owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has invested a lot, some player sales have also helped this remarkable recruitment take place.

What will Sunderland do before September 1 deadline?

Sunderland are pursuing another high-profile deal, this time for Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, with the Black Cats bidding over £24million for him in recent days.

Trey Ogunsuyi looks set to depart on loan before the deadline with his prospects of gametime looking limited.

Strasbourg winger Dilane Bakwa is also of interest, with Leeds among the admirers of the 22-year-old.

Dennis Cirkin has been linked with an exit, but it remains to be seen if Sunderland will let another key player leave despite the new arrivals at left-back.
