Sunderland ‘demand Simon Adingra’ from Brighton in return for Tommy Watson

Sunderland will only sanction an exit for Tommy Watson to Brighton if they agree to send Simon Adingra the other way, according to Craig Hope.

The Daily Mail journalist reported (3 February) that after rejecting an offer from Brighton of £8.5million plus add-ons for the 18-year-old, they would be tempted if they could take Adingra in return.

The deal would likely be a loan deal with an obligation to buy if Sunderland gain promotion to the Premier League.

However, the Seagulls have already rejected a £20million offer from Marseille for their winger, who they are not keen to let go.

Tommy Watson could be staying put at Sunderland

Watson is a highly rated star in the Championship and it’s not too surprising that there has been speculation over his future during the winter transfer window as a reflection of this.

Although he has suffered with injury of late, the 18-year-old has two goals in 10 league appearances and if he stays put, he will be a regular in the first-team squad when he regains fitness.

Therefore, you can understand the reluctance of the Black Cats to let him go and why they are trying to cover their own backs in any deal that is struck, to ensure they remain in a strong position in the second half of the campaign as they push for promotion.

However, this seems an unlikely deal. Given that Brighton turned down a £20m offer for Adingra, and only offered £8.5m for Watson, they clearly do not value the players close to each other and would see themselves at a loss if they sanctioned this deal.

If a transfer rests on this condition, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see everyone staying put where they are for the remainder of the campaign.
