‘Sunderland could hand Leeds seven-figure windfall’ amid £18m Cresswell update

Sunderland have done enough damage to Leeds United this summer, and their next move could benefit them.

The Black Cats are on the verge of completing a club-record deal that will see Habib Diarra become their second signing of the summer window, with Reinildo expected to be close behind him.

However, that will only mark the start of Sunderland‘s transfer business, with plenty more additions expected ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Attacking reinforcements will likely be next up on the list of priorities, but after an update from France, a new opportunity may have emerged to bolster their defence even further.

Charlie Cresswell emerges as Sunderland target

It has already been reported that Sunderland will sign a high-level centre back this summer, with Wilfried Singo among those to have been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light.

However, The Guardian (30 June) has reported that former Leeds defender Charlie Cresswell is now on their radar, having impressed throughout England’s U21 Euros-winning campaign.

Currently at Toulouse, Cresswell has thrived since his exit from Elland Road, with the Ligue 1 outfit now holding out for £18million if he is to leave this summer.

Several Premier League clubs have shown an interest, and the Whites could benefit from it should a deal occur.

After his sale, Leeds are believed to have included a 15 per cent sell-on clause in the deal, meaning an £18m transfer would see them receive a seven-figure windfall.

Sunderland are having a real go at survival

There is still a lot of work to be done on Wearside, but the level of ambition being shown by the Black Cats is astonishing this summer.

Having already broken their transfer record twice, it could yet happen again, with several more additions expected at the Stadium of Light in the coming weeks.
