Le Bris provides update on Chris Mepham ahead of Sunderland clash v Derby County
Chris Mepham is available for selection ahead of the clash between Sunderland and Derby County, despite being taken off with an injury against Burnley.
Sunderland’s 0-0 draw with Burnley on Friday (17 January) provided not only disappointment in the shape of the result, but also concern over the fitness of Mepham.
The Welshman, who has been an astounding signing for the Black Cats, was taken off with an injury in the latter stages of the game, but Regis Le Bris has revealed that he is okay ahead of Tuesday’s clash (21 January).
Speaking to the press, as quoted by the Northern Echo [20 January], Le Bris said: “Chris is feeling good. He has trained and there is no problem.”
Chris Mepham availability is a huge boost for Sunderland
When it comes to players who have had the biggest influence this season, Mepham is certainly up there having been a man mountain in the heart of defence.
Very few will have expected Dan Ballard to become a squad player this campaign, but the remarkable form of Mepham has seen just that and he is certainly one of the first names on the team sheet.
His experience and leadership qualities are evident every time that he steps onto the pitch and his defensive know-how sets him aside from most defenders in the Championship.

Keeping him fit will be crucial as the Black Cats continue their hunt for promotion, and his availability against Derby will provide them with a huge boost in a game they will certainly be expected to win.
A win for the Wearsiders could take them within two points of the summit of the Championship, while a defeat would offer a huge upset and provide a daunting blow to their hopes of automatic promotion if those around them keep on winning.
