Regis Le Bris gets his wish as Omar Alderete to Sunderland timeline laid out

Sunderland are closing in on a move to sign Omar Alderete from Getafe.

The Black Cats have made no secret of their desire to sign defensive reinforcements this summer, and after a deal was struck to sign Arthur Masuaku, they took one step closer to achieving that.

However, the need for a new centre-back remains evident, and Regis Le Bris made it clear that he wanted to see a new one arrive at the Stadium of Light before the season opener against West Ham.

Now, it appears as though Getafe’s Alderete is closing in on a move to Wearside in what will be a coup for Sunderland.

Sunderland deal ‘complete’ as Alderete heading to Wearside

Alderete made 36 appearances for Getafe last season across all competitions, and according to journalist Alvaro Ramos via X on 9 August, the Paraguayan is closing in on a move to Sunderland.

The 28-year-old will reportedly “set off for the Premier League in the coming hours” before putting pen to paper on a move to the Stadium of Light.

Le Bris’ side have been desperate for a new centre-back to arrive this summer, and the Getafe man will not only subdue those concerns, but also provide yet another injection of experience into a youthful squad.

All being well, it seems as though Alderete could be registered in time for Sunderland’s clash with West Ham, becoming their 11th addition of the summer window.

What else do Sunderland need?

Signing another forward is going to be essential, especially with Romaine Mundle set for a lengthy spell on the sideline.

Aside from that, the Black Cats will almost certainly be in for another centre-back, with depth also needed if they are to keep competing when the Africa Cup of Nations starts.

As it stands, Sunderland will have as many as five first-team players heading away for the competition, showcasing the need for a few more arrivals before 1 September.

Sunderland have shown plenty of ambition in the market so far, and will continue to do so in the coming weeks.
