Louie Barry signing mooted at Sunderland by Don Goodman

Don Goodman believes it would be a “win-win” situation for Sunderland if they can complete the loan signing of Louie Barry from Aston Villa.

Sunderland will undoubtedly be active in the upcoming transfer window and Barry is one name to have been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light (Sunday Mirror).

Given the current injury crisis at the club matched with the inconsistent performances from Eliezer Mayenda, attacking reinforcements will surely be on the agenda and Goodman exclusively told Mackem News Barry would be a “fantastic” signing.

Despite the fact that he hasn’t played in the championship, I wouldn’t have any great fears,” explained Goodman.

“I would look at somebody like Fin Azaz [at Middlesbrough] who hadn’t played in the championship either. And although slightly different types of players, not dissimilar in the journey that they’ve been on. So I wouldn’t see any reason why Louis Barry would not be a fantastic addition to that group at Sunderland.

“He’s young. He would fit the profile and he’d be playing in a team that wants to play front-foot, exciting, attacking football. It’s a win-win.”

Louie Barry could be a risk worth taking for Sunderland

Ultimately, any signing poses its own risks regardless of their history and it is no different for Barry who has excelled out on loan at Stockport.

Given the injury to Tommy Watson and Romaine Mundle, attacking depth is somewhat short at Sunderland and that will need to be addressed in January.

Barry’s potential signing could be a shrewd bit of business if he is able to carry on the momentum gained from his spell in League One which has earned him interest from several Championship clubs.

Whether any deal materialises is yet to be seen but it could certainly be a rumour that could rumble on over the coming weeks as the Black Cats continue their push for promotion.
