Jamie Carragher forced to eat his own words after what he’s said about Sunderland

Jamie Carragher was far too confident that Liverpool would take all three points against Sunderland.

Chemsdine Talbi scored his second of the season as Sunderland secured a 1-1 draw away to Liverpool on Wednesday.

Had it not been for Florian Wirtz’s deflected effort, the Black Cats could have easily come away from Anfield with all three points for the first time since 1983.

However, a point on their travels is still an excellent result, and one that very few saw coming, especially Carragher.

Sunderland were written off before the game started against Liverpool

Sunderland are where they are for a reason; they are an incredibly tough team to beat.

Each and every week, pundits expect their bubble to burst, and each and every week, they are forced to regret how much they underestimated the level of quality that Regis Le Bris has at his disposal.

It was again the case against Liverpool, when everyone aside from those on Wearside expected the Reds to coast to victory, despite having a turbulent campaign.

Carragher was one of them, and his words on the latest edition of The Overlap show why you should be careful of what you say.

When looking ahead to Sunderland’s clash with Man City, in footage that was evidently recorded before the Liverpool game, Carragher said: “I think Sunderland will be a bit deflated after their defeat at Liverpool,” before going on to predict a 3-0 win for Man City.

Liverpool were arguably fortunate to come away with a point, leaving Carragher looking very silly with the remark he made.

Gary Neville has lost his mind for agreeing with Jamie Carragher

Roy Keane predicted a 3-1 win for City, while Gary Neville agreed with Carragher’s 3-0.

These predictions hold very little value when you consider these two things.

Sunderland are unbeaten against five of last year’s top seven, and are yet to concede more than three goals in a game this season.

Erling Haaland and co will be a serious threat, but the Black Cats have already shown how they are willing to put their bodies on the line to defend their goal, and it will be no different on Saturday.

Sunderland will keep being the underdog this season, and that sentiment will only benefit them.
