Nordi Mukiele has been deemed as at fault for Liverpool's equaliser against Sunderland.

Florian Wirtz thought he had scored his first goal since his £116million move to Anfield, but his shot was going wide.

Sunderland put in a great effort and deserved to beat Liverpool, but the Reds ultimately fought back to level.

It will be an unwanted blemish on the French defender's record, as he has excelled since joining Sunderland in a £9.5m deal.

Premier League make announcement on Liverpool goal

Liverpool eventually levelled proceedings, leaving Regis Le Bris and Co. gutted after a brilliant performance on Merseyside.

The Premier League announced on 3 December that the goal had been given as a Mukiele own goal after the goal accreditation panel ruled on the matter.

The statement said: "The goal accreditation panel has adjudged Liverpool’s 81st minute goal as a Mukiele own goal."

Why Regis Le Bris will rue Sunderland inability to keep clean sheets

The Black Cats generally have a solid defense, as they proved again when keeping the hosts from winning the clash as they pushed for a late winner.

However, they deserved all three points from the contest, but allowed Wirtz to wriggle free and hit the ball towards the net, where it ricocheted off Mukiele into the net.

  • Sunderland had 32 per cent possession in the contest
  • They had nine shots to the hosts' 23 efforts, but had more on target, with six to the Reds' four
  • The champions had seven corners, with the Mackems only having three

Le Bris' side have not kept a clean sheet in their last six matches, since the 2-0 win over Wolves, who sit at the very bottom of the top-flight.

If the Mackems have any ambitions of a surprise European berth, then they need to be more solid at the back going forward, as shown by the display in L4.

The current standard will likely be enough to survive in the division, which is the primary objective, but many supporters at the Stadium of Light are dreaming of bigger things.

Those dreams, as lofty as they may be, will be shot down if their team continues to struggle to keep clean sheets on a regular basis.
