Granit Xhaka’s importance beyond Sunderland showcased by what he did vs Sweden
Granit Xhaka has been one of Sunderland’s stand-out players this season.
Sunderland’s adaptation to the Premier League has been excellent, and their summer arrivals have had a big say in that so far.
Near enough every one of them has hit the ground running, though none more so than Xhaka, who has been immense for Sunderland.
His importance at the Stadium of Light is already well documented, though it certainly stretches far beyond just club football.

Switzerland beat Sweden 2-0 with Granit Xhaka on scoresheet
Xhaka came 16th in the Ballon d’Or just two years ago, leaving nearly everyone baffled when there were a few suggestions that he was finished.
He certainly isn’t, and that was demonstrated once again in his display for Switzerland as they secured a 2-0 victory over Sweden on Friday night.
The 33-year-old opened the scoring for his country from the spot and played an integral role in the clash from the first minute to the last.
Via FotMob, Xhaka completed a remarkable 90 passes against Sweden, recording an 85 per cent pass accuracy in the process.

An identical completion rate was recorded for his long-ball attempts, with 11 successful.
Xhaka won 100 per cent of his aerial duels, and 57 per cent of those on the ground, while also making two interceptions.
Regis Le Bris will be delighted with the way his captain has continued his form over the break, though it was never really in doubt.
When is Granit Xhaka back in action for Switzerland?
Switzerland are looking all but nailed-on for a spot in the 2026 World Cup, having won all three of their qualification games so far, and all without conceding a single goal.
Xhaka will represent his country again on Monday evening, when Switzerland face Slovenia at the Stadion Stozice.
While there will be hope that Xhaka can again contribute to a win for his nation, Sunderland will be praying that he can return to the Stadium of Light unscathed, having suffered an injury scare with Noah Sadiki already over this break.
