Don Goodman urges Sunderland to seal new transfer before February 3

Don Goodman has urged Sunderland to sign a new striker ahead of the winter transfer deadline.

The Black Cats are enjoying a successful campaign so far but a lack of goals has been a concern for several weeks and with the exits of Aaron Connolly and Nazariy Ruysn, the need for a striker has grown.

Goodman previously said that he hoped the Wearsiders business isn’t finished yet ahead of the February 3 deadline on Monday.

Speaking exclusively to Mackem News, Goodman believes a public message has already been sent.

Well, we read that they were linked pretty seriously with Tom Cannon, which indicates that it clearly is an area that they feel they need to bring another body in,” he said.

“So the answer to [whether they need a striker] has to be yes because it’s an area that they’ve publicly highlighted that needs a body, whether that’s a body to bolster the squad or whether that’s a body that might challenge Wilson Isidor, who’s having a brilliant season, remains to be seen.

“But Mayenda’s very versatile. A number nine, if they could get their hands on one of those, then it might be a big boost for the final 17 games.”

Sunderland could seal promotion with the signing of a goalscorer

Although results have largely been positive in recent weeks, goals have still been hard to come by and if that concern persists, it could see their chances of promotion take a hit.

Isidor has proven his worth at Sunderland, but outside of him and Mayenda, the Black Cats lack any real source of goals with the injuries to Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson matched by the lack of goals scored by Patrick Roberts.

Given how tight the title race is this season, that could be the deciding factor and if the Mackems fail to address that in the coming days, they may be forced to regret it come the end of the campaign.

The final few days of the window will likely see Sunderland active in the market but until the signature is on the dotted line, little else matters.
