Aji Alese return update emerges as Sunderland face injury crisis
Aji Alese has played neither of the two Premier League games for Sunderland this season.
The 24-year-old centre-back has been ruled out with a shoulder injury and last featured for the Black Cats against Stoke City in January.
He had to undergo surgery, so he missed the rest of the 2024/25 campaign and has not yet recovered from it.
Alese is among a number of players to be out injured for Sunderland, with Romaine Mundle also battling fitness issues.
He was sorely missed in defence as Regis Le Bris’ side lost to Burnley on Saturday.

This article includes exclusive opinion from Dr Rajpal Brar, a doctor in physical therapy and a sports scientist.
Aji Alese to undergo gradual return to training
Given how long Alese has been ruled out, Dr Rajpal Brar does not expect a rushed return to training.
The Black Cats will likely see how his body responds, particularly to shoulder contact, before ramping up his drills.
The centre-back is severely lacking match sharpness as well, so it will take him a while to get to 100 per cent fitness.
- Alese joined Sunderland in 2022
- His contract at the Stadium of Light runs until 2027
- He is a former England Under-20s international
Discussing his situation, Dr Brar told Mackem News: “Unfortunately don’t have any specifics here other than a potential return in mid September.
“His return to training will be a gradual one to see how his body responds, particularly his shoulder to contact.
“The one positive with upper body injuries is that it’s easier to maintain some level of cardiovascular fitness compared to lower body injuries.“

Sunderland must not rush Alese back from injury
Alese’s return from injury will be a boost for Sunderland, but a cautious approach is essential to ensure his long-term fitness and impact.
The versatile defender, sidelined for months, is crucial for the Black Cats’ survival quest, offering stability at the back and flexibility in multiple roles.
Rushing him back risks re-injury, which could derail both his season and Sunderland’s ambitions.
A gradual reintegration, starting with limited minutes and careful monitoring, allows Alese to regain match sharpness without overloading his body.
His history of injuries underscores the need for patience, as premature starts could lead to setbacks.
By prioritising recovery and conditioning, Sunderland can maximise Alese’s contributions, ensuring he’s fully fit for critical fixtures ahead.
