Aji Alese has been ruled out for the remainder of the season for Sunderland, Regis Le bris has confirmed.

Sunderland have had their fair share of bad luck when it comes to injuries this season, with Alese the latest to suffer a massive setback.

Having picked up an injury in the Black Cats' FA Cup defeat to Stoke City, Le Bris has now confirmed that the defender will require surgery and will miss the remainder of the campaign.

Speaking to the press ahead of the clash with Plymouth Argyle, as quoted by the Northern Echo [23 January], Le Bris said: "[Alese] will miss the remainder of the season.

"We will see him again in pre-season. He has a broken leg. There was also a hand injury, but that bone is not broken. Both needed surgery.”

Sunderland getting even lighter in defence

The injury to Alese leaves the Mackems with just two fit full-backs in Trai Hume and Dennis Cirkin, with the latter hopefully past his recent injury nightmares.

Alese joins Niall Huggins on the treatment table, with the defensive numbers getting shorter and shorter with each passing week.

The seemingly imminent return of Jenson Seelt will alleviate some of those concerns, but with the Dutchman not having played for 10 months, it remains to be seen how much of an impact he can have on the remainder of the campaign.

Sunderland have been dealt some harsh injury blows this season, with Tommy Watson and Romaine Mundle both finding themselves on the sideline for the past several months, with several others also absent in different periods of the season.

If the Black Cats are to achieve promotion, these fortunes need to change as the piling up of injuries will do nothing but hamper those ambitions.
