Why Sunderland must make the most of key weapon in Premier League clash vs Wolves

Sunderland will look to continue their unbeaten Premier League record at the Stadium of Light as they take on Wolves on Saturday.

Having picked up seven points out of nine at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland could record 10 points from their first four home matches for the first time since 1968 in the Premier League.

Regis Le Bris’ side are punching above their weight this season, and Sunderland’s defensive solidity has caused issues for most teams they’ve come up against.

As they prepare to take on rock-bottom Wolves on 18 October, the game may come down to one key element, which the Black Cats excel at.

Sunderland’s set-piece threat could be crucial against struggling Wolves defence

Sunderland have proved to be a real threat in the air in both attacking and defensive situations this season.

Dan Ballard’s aerial presence has been powerful for the Black Cats, whilst Omar Alderete’s goal against Nottingham Forest showcased the work that’s been put in to catch teams out from attacking set-pieces.

Whilst Alderete is a doubt for the Wolves match, Ballard and Nordi Mukiele could still make key contributions at the other end of the pitch that may define the outcome of Saturday’s clash.

45 per cent of Sunderland’s non-penalty expected goals tally in the Premier League this season has come from set-pieces (2.5 set-piece xG, 5.6 total).

This is the highest ratio of any side in 2025-26, whilst Wolves have faced 37 per cent of their non-penalty expected goals against xGA (expected goals against) from set plays, the fourth-highest of any club.

With Wolves incredibly susceptible to conceding headers from set-piece situations, Sunderland’s aerial prowess could be incredibly effective in Saturday’s match.

Sunderland’s set-piece success is not just down to the powerful defenders, but it is also down to one man’s quality on the ball.

Granit Xhaka’s set-piece deliveries have been excellent

Granit Xhaka’s quality has been invaluable for Sunderland, with the 32-year-old midfielder already providing three assists this season.

Le Bris could not be more delighted with the Switzerland international’s impact at the heart of midfield, and his side are clearly reaping the rewards.

Xhaka’s smart free-kick, which led to Alderete’s goal in Nottingham, was a moment of ingenuity and showcased a brilliant mixture of his intelligence and quality.

Having left Champions League side Bayer Leverkusen in favour of a move to the North East, fans were thrilled at his signing before the start of the season.

His game-changing contributions have enhanced that belief, with supporters in full belief that when Xhaka is over a set-piece situation, anything could happen.
