Who is Timur Tutierov? Meet Sunderland’s next star making waves in the academy

Sunderland have produced some quality players over the years and possess several more in the making.

Chris Rigg recently made his first Premier League start against Nottingham Forest and is an example of what academy players can achieve.

Furthermore, you only need to look at Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford as examples of how far the Black Cats’ young players can go.

Timur Tutierov is the latest player to garner attention for his performances and could go on to be the next academy product to make a name for himself on Wearside.

Timur Tutierov: From Ukraine to Sunderland

While other news took precedent on Wearside over the summer, Tutierov signed a fresh contract at Sunderland, keeping him at the club until 2027.

The left-winger arrived in the North East from Ukrainian outfit Kolos Kovalivka on a free transfer in 2023.

Tutierov wasted no time in making an impact for the Black Cats and bagged an assist in his debut for the under-21s against West Brom.

However, injuries hampered his impact for Sunderland, meaning he was in and out of the youth team during the 2023-24 season.

Last term, the Ukrainian suffered more setbacks but made telling contributions when they mattered, firing home a goal against the Newcastle United under-21s.

Now, the 20-year-old is making even more of a name for himself after a series of impressive finishes for the North East club.

Timur Tutierov turns Luke O’Nien’s head with recent performance

Tutierov recently scored a superb solo goal for Sunderland, which was so good it got a reaction from O’Nien.

Indeed, that strike was one of two that the winger bagged against Burnley’s under-21s at the back end of September.

The devastating clip encapsulates just what Tutierov is capable of, with his pace and strength a worrying sight for defenders.

While many might look at his age and say that he should be making a mark on the first team, he has endured his setbacks, and players develop at different rates.

Clearly, there is an immense talent in there, and his ability to sprint behind Burnley’s defenders with ease is reminiscent of a prime Viktor Gyokeres.

Although Regis Le Bris boasts several quality wingers, Tutierov has a different profile and could be the next in line to break the first team.
