Where Sunderland currently stand with PSR after big-money spending in summer transfer window

Sunderland enjoyed a summer like no other, with a record amount of spending on new players.

The Black Cats broke their transfer record twice, with Enzo Le Fee and then Habib Diarra arriving at Sunderland.

However, the most significant signing was arguably Granit Xhaka, whom Kyril Louis-Dreyfus convinced to join the Wearsiders.

Given the North East club spent just over £161million on 15 new players, supporters will understandably want to know where they stand with PSR.

Sunderland can make signings in January if required

Sunderland outspent Leeds United this summer, while beating them to several transfer targets.

The reason they were able to do that was because they had spent precious little over the years, while the Peacocks were restricted due to their previous outlays in the top flight.

Having spent sensibly since his arrival, Louis-Dreyfus unleashed his wallet to build Regis Le Bris a Premier League survival squad.

However, the Black Cats still retain enough PSR headroom to go again in January if required, according to The i Paper on 7 September.

While there is potential for more signings if needed, they report that Plan A is for this team to continue adapting to the rigors of the Premier League.

Why would Kyril Louis-Dreyfus need to spend more in January?

While Louis-Dreyfus will be hoping that he does not need to delve back into his pockets in January, it is never that simple.

Sunderland have already shown they are capable of picking up results, with two wins from their opening three Premier League games.

However, if they occupy the relegation places heading into the January window, then the chairman may have to act.

Given that the North East club possess a large cohort of players heading to the Africa Cup of Nations, that could also influence decisions.

However, Le Bris and Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman have both implied the competitive squad should be able to handle that.

Of course, it is also impossible to predict what will happen with injuries, and if they were to lose a key player for a substantial amount of time, then that could also force their hand.

For now, Sunderland are in a strong position, and it is encouraging to know that they can spend more if necessary.
