Where Jhon Lucumi will rank in Sunderland’s most expensive signings as new mega-bid submitted
Jhon Lucumi could become Sunderland’s 13th signing of the summer as the Black Cats up their chase of the defender.
Regis Le Bris has been chasing a new defender for some time this summer, with it being one of the new positions that hasn’t been significantly strengthened.
As a result, Sunderland have been chasing Jhon Lucumi as their priority target with less than a week left of the transfer window.
Now, if the Black Cats are to sign the Colombian, a big fee could be needed to get the 27-year-old.

Jhon Lucumi could become Sunderland’s second most expensive signing
Reports on Wednesday emerged that Sunderland had bid £24.13million for Lucumi.
This comes amid an already highly expensive window for the Black Cats, with their spending already around the £140m mark.
Now, if the bid for Lucumi is accepted, the defender is set to become Sunderland’s second most expensive signing.
Habib Diarra will remain Sunderland’s record transfer after moving to the Stadium of Light for £30m.
Sunderland top five most expensive signings ever | Reported fee |
Habib Diarra | £30m |
Jhon Lucumi (if current bid is accepted) | £24.13m |
Simon Adingra | £21m |
Chemsdine Talbi | £19.5m |
Enzo Le Fee | £19m |
Moving down to third would be Simon Adingra, who was also signed by Sunderland this summer for £21m.
In fact, you’d have to go down to seventh in the list to find a player who wasn’t brought by the Black Cats over the past few months, with this being Didier N’Dong.

Where does Sunderland’s net spend rank in the Premier League?
As it stands, Sunderland currently have the seventh-highest net spend in the Premier League.
However, if the Lucumi deal goes through, this would see the Black Cats rise to third in the rankings, overtaking Newcastle, Manchester City, Liverpool and Everton.
Place | Team | Current net spend |
1st | Arsenal | -£246.12m |
2nd | Manchester United | -£198.02m |
3rd | Everton | -£106.68m |
4th | Liverpool | -£103.61m |
5th | Manchester City | -£102.08m |
6th | Newcastle United | -£99.28m |
7th | Sunderland | -£98.29m |
8th | Tottenham | -£94.92m |
Arsenal currently top the list, with Manchester United in second, and it would take some significant business to take place in the remaining days for the Black Cats to topple the duo.
Hopefully, this business will pay off for Le Bris as he now looks to use his new assets to avoid relegation.
