Wembley drive Sunderland v Sheffield United tickets ‘underground’ – Exclusive
Sunderland’s Championship play-off final with Sheffield United caused plenty of uproar on the ticketing front.
Sunderland make the trip to Wembley on Saturday (24 May), with hopes of sealing the win that would see them return to the Premier League for the first time since 2016.
Regis Le Bris‘ side will be backed by over 36,000 Wearside supporters in the capital, though not without their troubles.
Sunderland supporters experienced an array of issues when purchasing tickets for the final, with one of those issues seeing fans exploited for their loyalty.

Sunderland supporters taken advantage of after Wembley reveal
Sunderland have some of the most passionate fans in the country, though that loyalty often comes at a cost when third parties are involved.
Tickets for the final were like gold dust, which ultimately led to Wembley resellers pricing Sunderland tickets at double what Sheffield United fans were having to pay, and finance expert Dan Plumley doesn’t think there’s a lot that can be done to stop it.
Team | Position | Goal Difference | Points |
Sheffield United | 3 | 27 | 90 |
Sunderland | 4 | 14 | 76 |
Speaking to Mackem News, he said: “I think at the minute, there’s not a lot you can do. The only way really we move forward with that is a kind of regulated secondary market thing, which is not quite there at the minute.
“If you look at what’s happening here, these kinds of ticket price caps that are set by Wembley as an example, they don’t really serve to do too much because it forces tickets underground, and that’s what’s kind of happening here.
“I think a solution might be regulated secondary marketplaces, but of course, not a lot of people want to go there as well.
“So I think at the minute we kind of are where we are with it, and there’s not really a lot the authorities can do because everything’s just being forced underground and then you get these resale prices that nobody’s got any control over.”

Le Bris can write history with Sunderland
Sunderland are just 90 minutes away from Premier League football, which would be a huge achievement if they manage to win at Wembley.
Supporters have been tested for their loyalty over the past decade, and this could be the time where they finally get their reward.
All eyes will be on Wembley ahead of what promises to be an electric weekend.
