Ian Poveda has sustained yet another injury at Sunderland which has seen him play just 44 minutes since arriving in the summer and his future needs to come under question.

Having only recently returned from a injury, Poveda looks set for another spell on the sidelines with the Northern Echo reporting (1 January) another setback for the Colombian.

Poveda has played just 44 minutes of football this season and will more than likely be on a pretty wage on Wearside and those finances can be used elsewhere to a much better effect as the Black Cats chase January reinforcements in a bid to strengthen their hopes of achieving promotion.

Arriving on a free transfer, many had high hopes for Poveda but his signing has produced nothing other than a nightmare with somewhat of an injury crisis at the Stadium of Light.

Ian Poveda has been a failed experiment at Sunderland

While there's little to be lost given he arrived on a free transfer, the wages paid out for a player to have not even played a full half of football this season will be concerning.

Sunderland have suffered injuries throughout the campaign with nine players currently on the sidelines with several having only recently returned.

Priorities in the January transfer window have to be on strengthening the squad but a decision will have to be made on Poveda given the lack of influence he is having.

It is highly unlikely any club will be willing to pay a fee for someone with such a daunting history of injuries but it may be a case of the Black Cats cutting their losses and terminating his contract if he is to continue the injury woes.

Although he's barely featured, its yet another blow to Sunderland in a season that has been riddled with bad luck.
