View: Sunderland should reignite Kwame Poku interest in January amid transfer development

Peterborough United’s Kwame Poku sees his current contract expire at the end of the season and Sunderland must attempt to sign the winger in January.

Poku has had a remarkable start to his League One campaign with seven goals and four assists in 14 games despite his side sitting 13th in the table.

A player who offers a significant threat going forward with a proven end product, Sunderland need to entertain the idea of acquiring his services in January.

As per TeamTalk, Sunderland expressed an interest in the winger prior to the last January transfer window though no move materialised.

Blackburn Rovers are the most recent side to be linked with a move for Poku according to Alan Nixon, October 27 and Sunderland should get involved

Kwame Poku would be a sensational signing for Sunderland

There aren’t too many Sunderland options on the right wing. Patrick Roberts is the Black Cats’ main man in that position with Ian Poveda seemingly second in line. However, with the latter’s injury troubles continuing, reinforcements could be required to boost their hopes of promotion.

Roberts has also embodied frustration in recent weeks, with the winger recording a remarkably poor 0 per cent dribble completion rate in Sundeland’s October victory over Hull City, according to FotMob.

Although his performances since have seen improvement, he has still shown a lack of cutting edge in the final third at times.

Poku has constantly been earmarked as a potential future Premier League player and has always been the bright spark in Peterborough’s side.

Last season, Poku reached 11 goals in league competition and his ability to score from a wide position is arguably something the Black Cats have been lacking. Especially from the right-hand side.

With Poku out of contract in the summer, January could be the perfect time to try and force the hand of the League One club who will more than likely hope to receive a fee for a player that looks set to depart on a free just six months later.
