Troy Deeney surprised by what ‘excellent’ Sunderland star has achieved this season

Troy Deeney was blown away by one Sunderland star in particular in their draw with Arsenal.

Not by luck, Sunderland are fourth in the Premier League heading into the November international break, having picked up 19 points from their 11 fixtures so far this season.

Their latest draw with Arsenal at the Stadium of Light is arguably their best result of the season, closely followed by their impressive 2-1 triumph away to Chelsea just weeks prior.

As expected, Granit Xhaka is the one who has emerged with the most credit for Sunderland this season, though Deeney wasted no time in hailing one of his Wearside teammates after the heroics he displayed against the Gunners.

Dan Ballard has been the shock performer for Sunderland

Last season, Dan Ballard was a third-choice centre back for Sunderland in the Championship, though his fortunes have changed quite dramatically.

After his monstrous display in the play-offs, the 26-year-old has become an ever-present under Regis Le Bris, and it was no different against Arsenal.

Ballard was immense against Mikel Arteta’s side, not only scoring the first goal, but producing a world-class block to prevent Arsenal’s third, catching the attention of Deeney in his process.

The BBC Sport pundit hailed his impact on Saturday and named him in his Premier League Team of the Week.

“Best player on the pitch in the draw with Arsenal,” said Deeney.

“I know Gunners fans will be annoyed with that, but the simple beauty of being able to be physical and have sense and understanding of the game, tactical awareness.

“What a finish as well. He has really surprised me because I thought he might be one who would struggle stepping up from the Championship, but so far, he has been excellent.

The numbers behind Dan Ballard’s heroics vs Arsenal

Ballard hasn’t put a foot wrong for Sunderland this season, at either end of the pitch.

Via FotMob, his goal against the Gunners arrived with an xG of 0.09, which was converted into 0.41 xGOT, showcasing just how well he took the chance against the best defence in Europe.

The Northern Ireland defender made six clearances in the game, winning six of his defensive duels in the process.

Aerially, Ballard has been immense this season, and it was crucial that he replicated that strength against Arsenal, given their strengths from set pieces.

There are many candidates, but Ballard is emerging as a player of the season contender, and very few people expected that.
