Troy Deeney stunned by Sunderland star’s Premier League adaptation after Aston Villa display
Sunderland proved their doubters wrong once again in their clash with Aston Villa
Despite being reduced to ten men after Reinildo was sent off for violent conduct, Sunderland showed resilience to fight back and earn a draw against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
The result means that the Black Cats have picked up eight points from their first five games, and are sitting well in eighth place.
Nordi Mukiele earned praise for his display against Aston Villa, but it was another Sunderland star who caught the attention of Troy Deeney, and he’s been pleasantly surprised by how he’s been proven wrong this season.

Wilson Isidor made Premier League history for Sunderland vs Aston Villa
One of the biggest concerns that people had of Sunderland at the very start of their season was where their goals would come from.
After five games, those questions have been answered, with Wilson Isidor scoring again for Sunderland in their draw with the Villans.
Isidor became the first ever player to score in each of a newly-promoted side’s first three games in Premier League history, and by doing so, earned a spot in Deeney’s BBC Sport Team of the Week.
On his inclusion, Deeney said: ” I must admit I didn’t know if this kid would be good enough to make it at the next level.
Isidor’s season so far at Sunderland
- 5 appearances
- 2 starts
- 3 goals
- 235 minutes played
” I saw him in the Championship last year, he was good – very long and rangy – but he only got 13 goals, I wasn’t sure if he had the quality.
“He’s taken to the Premier League like a duck to water. Working hard for his team. His goal against Aston Villa was a great finish.”

Wilson Isidor is tailor-made for this Sunderland team
Sunderland are not going to dominate possession in games, as showcased by the fact that they had just 29 per cent of it at home to the Villans.
Granted, they had 10 men on the pitch for an hour of the game, but it would have been a very similar story even had Reinildo stayed on the pitch.
When that is the case, you need to have someone at the top of the pitch who can take chances when they arise, and Isidor, with three goals in as many home games, has showcased his ability to be that player.
He may not offer an awful lot on the ball outside of that, but for his pressing and finishing alone, he is a crucial aspect of this Sunderland team.
Brian Brobbey is still awaiting his first real chance at Sunderland, and after Sunday’s game, he may have to wait even longer.
