Troy Deeney names three Sunderland players in Team of the Week including ‘exquisite’ star

Sunderland have earned recognition for their performance against Nottingham Forest.

Sunderland’s 1-0 victory away to Nottingham Forest was a statement win, and also their first triumph on the road so far this season.

It saw the Black Cats temporarily move up to third in the league, with Sunderland marking their best-ever Premier League start under Regis Le Bris.

As a result of their display at the City Ground, three Wearside stars have been named in Troy Deeney’s Team of the Week, and they are all more than deserving of their spot.

Robin Roefs one of three players praised for Forest display

Robin Roefs has been incredible for Sunderland so far this season, and it was no different against Forest.

The Dutchman made six saves, preventing over two goals, and was generally reliable when it came to controlling his penalty area.

He earned a spot in Deeney’s BBC Sport Team of the Week, alongside captain Granit Xhaka and Omar Alderete.

Sunderland’s stats vs Forest

Xhaka needs no introduction at Sunderland, but it truly is mind-blowing how the Black Cats have attracted him to the Stadium of Light after yet another dominant display in the middle of the park.

On Alderete’s inclusion, Deeney said: “That back six had an unbelievable game. They dug in, they ground out a win, and it just goes to show, especially for new teams coming up, it doesn’t matter how you win.

“You’ve just got to get the win and get it done. I thought Alderete was exquisite.”

It was his goal that earned Sunderland all three points against Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Sunderland have some sensational players on their hands

Aside from their defeat to Burnley, Sunderland have had a player named in a Team of the Week off the back of every one of their games this season.

Whether it be Nordi Mukiele, who has impressed at Sunderland, or Roefs after another masterclass between the sticks, it goes to show just how good this squad truly is.

Relegation is still a possibility for Sunderland, but with the start they have made and the confidence flowing through the team, it isn’t even a consideration at the moment.
