Trey Ogunsuyi: Sunderland starlet’s future examined amid Shrewsbury loan struggles

Trey Ogunsuyi could be in for a decisive summer at Sunderland when he returns from his loan spell at Shrewsbury.

Ogunsuyi was widely regarded as one of, if not Sunderland’s most promising prospects, only a few seasons ago, having even earned interest from Liverpool as a result of his performances at youth level.

The 19-year-old scored seven goals in six appearances for the Black Cats’ Under-18s last season, while also having had a hand in 17 goals in 22 appearances for the Under-21s.

A move to Falkirk, which failed, and then to Shrewsbury would be the steps that followed for the teenager, but his current loan has not gone to plan either.

How has Trey Ogunsuyi fared at Shrewsbury?

Minutes haven’t been as regular for Ogunsuyi as he would have perhaps liked, but he has showcased very little when he has been afforded the chance.

He’s managed just two goals in his 12 League Two appearances, with both of them coming in Shrewsbury’s 3-2 win over Chesterfield back at the start of March.

Ogunsuyi has started six times for The Shrews, with his limitations on the ball being exposed more than anything.

The teen has completed just 59.2 per cent of his attempted passes this season, with an average of 10 per 90 minutes played.

Physically, he has coped well, as demonstrated by the fact that he has won 48 per cent of his total duels this season, which places him among the top 10 per cent of forwards in the league.

What’s next for Ogunsuyi at Sunderland?

Ogunsuyi will have two years left on his Sunderland contract come the end of the season, having signed a new deal last summer.

Given the struggles he has faced in League Two, it’s almost certain he will have no part to play on Wearside next season, with another loan move the most likely outcome.

But with his struggles within the EFL this season, a move further down the English pyramid may be needed to ensure that he is getting the minutes.

Not only would that ensure that he gets the minutes he needs to continue his development, but it would also give him the platform to showcase why he has the reputation he has.
