View: Trey Ogunsuyi is the answer to David Jones’ January question
Trey Ogunsuyi was on the scoresheet for Sunderland Under-21’s again on Wednesday as the Black Cats were held to a 2-2 draw against Gateshead.
Ogunsuyi has been in exceptional form at youth level this season, having already entered double figures for goals.
His performance against Gateshead earned his side a point in the National League Cup with Adil Aouchiche the other goalscorer on 4 December.
A claim made by Jones earlier in the week suggested another striker signing should be considered by Sunderland but the form of Liverpool-linked Ogunsuyi (Sunderland Echo) should eradicate those concerns.
Trey Ogunsuyi deserves a shot in the Sunderland first-team
Wilson Isidor has been brilliant for the Black Cats this campaign, there’s no doubt that he must remain the starting striker for the foreseeable.
However, the lack of contributions from others should pave the way for Ogunsuyi who has showcased himself as a clinical finisher at youth level.
Eliezer Mayenda, Aaron Connolly and Nazarii Rusyn have just three goals between them, albeit with the latter having barely featured this season.
A lack of goal threat from senior attackers should be used as a reason to experiment for Regis Le Bris and with a hectic Christmas schedule approaching, there would be no better time to do that.
Of course, youth football is in stark contrast to senior football and that will be considered before the Belgian is thrown into first-team football, but as the old saying goes, if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.
That could very well be the case for Ogunsyi who must get a chance before the Wearsiders make any move in January.
