Trey Ogunsuyi a victim of Sunderland success as most likely next destination named

Trey Ogunsuyi is set to leave Sunderland before the transfer window closes next week.

Ogunsuyi was linked with a move to Liverpool last season after some sensational performances at youth level.

However, the teenager remained on Wearside and signed a new contract with the North East club just weeks ago.

Now, it appears that the forward will pay the price for Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League, with a move imminent – albeit a temporary one.

Trey Ogunsuyi set to leave Sunderland on loan

Sunderland held onto Ogunsuyi last term despite interest from the Premier League champions.

Such was his impact at youth level that there was talk of him even gracing the first team this season.

However, with the Wearsiders now a Premier League club, opportunities were always going to be sparse for the 18-year-old.

Now, it is understood that Ogunsuyi is close to leaving Sunderland on loan, according to James Copley via X on 27 August.

The Sunderland Echo journalist reports that while there are a host of interested suitors, Scotland is looking like his most likely destination as things stand.

Copley adds that the Black Cats have multiple offers on the table for the 18-year-old, with clubs in League One, League Two and Belgium also interested.

Would Scotland be a good destination for Trey Ogunsuyi?

Sunderland have loaned out several players to Scottish clubs over the years, and they have had differing spells.

Nectar Triantis is perhaps the biggest success story, having enjoyed two loans with Hibernian.

The midfielder was loaned out to Hibs in the second half of the 2023/24 season before rejoining them for almost all of the 2024/25 campaign.

Indeed, he received immense praise for his performances in the hub of midfield and has now departed for Minnesota United.

On the other hand, Eliezer Mayenda endured a torrid time at Easter Road, failing to score in just four appearances.

Of course, it depends on where Ogunsuyi ends up, but he has shown plenty of promise to suggest he can flourish wherever he goes on loan.

Furthermore, if he is successful, then the move could pave the way for him to make an impact on the Sunderland first team.
