Sunderland's Premier League rivals among trio who want to sign Dan Neil after Stadium of Light exit
Dan Neil will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Sunderland supporters.
The versatile midfielder lived the dream of every Black Cats supporter, rising through the youth ranks and going on to captain his boyhood club.
His crowning moment, of course, was the play-off final victory over Sheffield United at Wembley in the 2024/25 season.
Neil struggled for first-team football under Regis Le Bris in the Premier League, though.
That led to him spending the second of last season with Ipswich Town on loan, while it was confirmed he would leave the Stadium of Light for good at the end of his contract.
But Sunderland supporters might be in for a reunion sooner that they might have expected after a new report on Thursday.
Premier League new boys eye Dan Neil free agent signing
You would be hard pushed to find any Sunderland supporter who will not wish Neil well in his next venture such is his standing with the fans.
While it has yet to be announced who his next club with be, Ben Jacobs has now shed some light on where his he will ply his trade.
According to the sports broadcaster and prominent transfer expert, Premier League new boys Hull City are among those pondering a move for the 24-year-old.
West Ham United were among the clubs tipped with his signing before he joined Ipswich back in January.
The Hammers are said to be still interested in taking him to the London Stadium, as they gear up to play in the Championship next season.
Scottish Premiership giants Rangers, like West Ham, were also rumoured to be interested back in January, and are still eyeing a move now, according to Jacobs.
When do Sunderland play Hull City?
It is obviously not set in stone that Neil will join the Tigers, especially if several clubs are interested.
But you could see the allure, given they can offer him another crack at proving himself in the Premier League next season.
If he were to join Hull then Sunderland fans would be get a glimpse of their former player sooner than they might have thought.
It would not be until early in 2027, though, with Sunderland set to welcome Hull for their first game of the New Year at the Stadium of Light.
They are slated to face off with Hull again just a month later on 10 February, though of course games could still be moved for television coverage.
