Sunderland are eyeing a replacement for Marc Guiu before the transfer deadline.

Guiu arrived at the Stadium of Light on a season-long loan, but events have taken a bizarre twist.

Chelsea reached an agreement with Sunderland to recall the striker after the injury suffered by Liam Delap against Fulham.

Now, the Black Cats have made a late move for a forward who made history for his exploits in front of goal.

Sunderland in talks to sign Brian Brobbey

Fears grew that Guiu could be recalled from his loan at Sunderland, but those fears have now become a reality.

Guiu was seen as a solid addition for the Black Cats after what he achieved for the Blues in Europe last season.

Furthermore, his career trajectory, from Barcelona to Chelsea, suggested that he was poised to make a mark on Wearside.

However, now the North East club are having to work quickly on his replacement after news of his return to West London.

  • Guiu scored one goal for Sunderland in the Carabao Cup
  • He has played 103 minutes of football for the Black Cats
  • Made two Premier League appearances

Now, Sunderland are working on a deal to sign Brobbey as their new striker from Ajax, according to Fabrizio Romano on 31 August.

He reports that a move is not easy, but talks are underway to try to get it done, as Guiu is expected to return to Chelsea on deadline day.

How did Brian Brobbey make history for Ajax?

Sunderland need more depth in their forward line, with just Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor as quality options.

Both have made an impact already in the Premier League, but in Brobbey they can add a cutting edge.

During his time in the Netherlands, the 23-year-old broke a record held for 50 years in a 1-1 draw against PSV Eindhoven, as he became the first Ajax player in half a century to either assist or score a goal in 12 straight games in 2023.

The previous record was held by 1970s hero Ruud Geels, but setting up Steven Berghuis for his team’s goal saw the striker grab his own little piece of history.

It is of paramount importance that the Wearsiders get a deal done before the deadline, and they will be hellbent on securing Brobbey.
