Sunderland aren't giving up their hopes to sign Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi this summer transfer window.

Regis Le Bris' team want the Serie A defender, but the Rossoblu reject the initial offer from the Wearside outfit.

Bologna then received another bid for Lucumi from the Black Cats, and they have now received a response from the Italian club.

Bologna not giving in after £21m+ Sunderland offer for Lucumi transfer

Bologna are "not giving in" after Sunderland offered more than £21million, including add-ons, for Lucumi, according to Il Resto del Carlino.

The news outlet reports (26 July) that while the Colombia international's release clause of over £24m expired recently, the Serie A outfit want the same for his potential move to the Stadium of Light.

It's been claimed that the Italian club are willing to accept deferred payments for the 27-year-old's transfer, with the centre-back evaluating his options this summer.

The defender put himself in the market at the start of the ongoing transfer window and is now considering offers from the Premier League.

Sunderland have already spent a significant amount of money to bolster their ranks after returning to the top flight, and Lucumi's situation will be one to keep an eye on.

Le Bris should push for defensive reinforcements at Sunderland

Former Atletico Madrid left-back Reinildo Mandava has been signed to reinforce the defence, but more additions are arguably needed.

While Luke O'Nien and Dan Ballard were key players as the Black Cats won promotion from the Championship, they will undoubtedly need more quality in the back to help avoid immediate relegation next season.

Sunderland have made several impressive additions to their squad this summer, especially with Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki in the engine room.

The Wearside outfit have also signed Simon Adingra from Brighton, while Chemsdine Talbi has also arrived to provide attacking depth.

With Jenson Seelt, Aji Alese and Joe Andersen the other options at Le Bris' disposal for the centre-back position, the Black Cats should focus on reinforcing the department.

Lucumi has been a key player for Bologna over the years, helping them to Champions League qualification, but it remains to be seen whether the Wearside outfit will pull off a deal for him.
