Aaron Wan-Bissaka transfer nonsensical for Sunderland as West Ham exit demands set
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been linked with a summer transfer to Sunderland.
The Black Cats had a remarkable campaign last time out, but as Granit Xhaka said himself, this is only the start of their journey
Sunderland will be looking to compete in the Europa League, while also ensuring that their domestic form doesn't suffer as a result.
To achieve that, the Wearsiders will be expected to bring in a handful of new players to cover the gaps in their squad, and ensure that they have adequate depth to cope with the demands they look set to face.
However, reports linking Sunderland with a move for Wan-Bissaka seem to go against that, and for more than one reason.
Do Sunderland really need Wan-Bissaka?
Would he be a decent addition? More than likely. But is it a transfer that makes little sense? Absolutely.
You could highlight several areas of the squad in which the Black Cats need to add more depth to, and right-back simply isn't one of them.
Nordi Mukiele was one of the best defenders in the Premier League last season, while Trai Hume also proved his worth in the top flight more often than not whenever he was called upon.
To add a third option in that area of the squad, and for the reported £20million that may be required, simply would not make any sense for the Wearsiders.
It's unknown how much money will be available, but that would be likely to be a large chunk of it to strengthen an area that is already well stacked.
Sunderland have clear transfer call to make
Wan-Bissaka simply is not needed at the Stadium of Light, but the arrival of another defender may be.
And that brings us back to Lutsharel Geertruida, who can also play at right-back, while also having the versatility to be utilised in several other psitiions.
For the same price, his deal being made permanent would make far more sense for Sunderland, as opposed to making a move for Wan-Bissaka, who was far from his best for West Ham last season.
Sunderland have made very few recruitment errors since their return to the top flight, and that needs to continue this summer.
