View: Trai Hume makes Sunderland statement with 100% showing v Derby County

Trai Hume put in another impressive performance for Sunderland as they secured a 1-0 victory away to Derby County on Tuesday night.

The Black Cats continued their push for promotion with another three points secured against Derby County in controversial style.

Hume, who has been a consistent performer this season, put in yet another solid display against the Rams with a statement made to many who had written the full-back off.

With the pending return of Jenson Seelt, it will be imperative that Hume maintains his level of performance to retain this place in the starting 11.

Perhaps as expected, much of the attention from the clash has been drawn to the controversy surrounding Sunderland’s ‘second goal’, which was ruled out for reasons still unbeknown.

However, the performance of Hume shouldn’t be overshadowed by an abhorrent refereeing decision, with the Northern Ireland international impressing yet again.

Via FotMob, Hume completed 78 per cent of his passes, 11 of which were to into the Derby final third. While there are certainly improvements to be made in that regard, his game only gets better from there.

The 22-year-old won 100 per cent of his even tackles, the most in the game which helped alleviate any pressure on the Black Cats back line.

Hume was involved in a remarkable 17 defensive duels, of which he came out with the ball on 14 occasions, again the most of any player on the pitch.

He won all five of his aerial duels as well as nine of his 12 on the ground.

With 13 defensive actions, Derby were unable to offer any real threat down his side of the pitch.

There are certainly areas of his game that could be improved but it’s crucial to consider that, like many others in this side, he’s still just 22 years old and further improvement will come.
