Timo Werner has ‘Sunderland written all over him’ as £3.4m transfer news emerges
Sunderland are sure to be linked with several new players this summer ahead of their return to the Premier League next season.
Regis Le Bris’ men enjoyed a fantastic season in the Championship last time out, despite having the division’s second-youngest squad.
One of the Black Cats’ biggest summer priorities will be trying to retain as many of their young stars as possible, with the likes of Chris Rigg, Jobe Bellingham and Eliezer Mayenda already drawing plenty of interest from elsewhere.
However, with the gap between the Premier League and the Championship growing by the year, it won’t be enough for Sunderland to head into the next campaign without several reinforcements.

Sunderland fans react to Timo Werner revelation
One player who appears to be available for a potential transfer back to the Premier League this summer is Timo Werner.
The frontman was once one of Germany’s brightest talents, but his career has completely stagnated across a pair of loan spells with Tottenham in the last two seasons.
Werner seemingly has no way back at his parent club, RB Leipzig, with the Bundesliga side reportedly wanting just £3.4million to allow the 29-year-old to leave the club this summer, according to BILD (2 June).
Sunderland fans were quick to react to the news, amid a suggestion that their club should be taking a look at the striker, with a view to bringing him to the Stadium of Light.
The Mackems faithful had mixed opinions on the idea of signing the German, with one fan saying Werner has “Sunderland written all over him” because he is “A striker that doesn’t score goals.”
Sunderland should steer clear of Werner
On the face of it, £3.4m seems like a no-brainer to bring Werner in for. The German was a consistent goalscorer back in the early stages of his Leipzig career, and even notched 34 in a single season for the controversial Bundesliga outfit back in 2019/20.
That campaign is what earned him his £47.5m move to Chelsea, and unfortunately, his career hasn’t been the same since then.
Club | Apps | Goals | Assists |
RB Leipzig | 211 | 113 | 40 |
VfB Stuttgart | 99 | 14 | 11 |
Chelsea | 88 | 23 | 18 |
Tottenham | 41 | 3 | 6 |
He found the back of the net just twice in the Premier League for Spurs, across 31 appearances for the North London side.
While £3.4m feels like a bargain in many ways for a Premier League club, Werner’s wages will be sky-high, and for that reason, the Black Cats are better off steering clear of the 29-year-old.
They won’t be short of money this summer, especially with Bellingham set to depart, however that is no excuse to waste what they do have by making ill-advised signings.
A transfer swoop for the German could have turned into a masterstroke, had Sunderland been able to help him rediscover his goalscoring form.
However, when you factor in his likely wage demands, it would surely be too big of a gamble for the North East outfit, who would be better off spending that money elsewhere on more reliable performers.
