Sunderland’s summer disappointment offers sliding door moment after incredible scenes vs Chelsea

Sunderland secured a momentous victory away to Chelsea to take them up to second in the Premier League.

Your eyes don’t deceive you. After Sunderland’s 2-1 victory against Chelsea, the Black Cats are just two points off the summit of the Premier League.

Goals from Wilson Isidor and a remarkable 93rd-minute winner from Chemsdine Talbi secured one of the Black Cats’ biggest wins in years.

However, none of this would likely have happened had it not been for one dealing in the summer transfer window that ended in short-lived disappointment.

Wilson Isidor is in the form of his life for Sunderland, and he could have been a bench option

Sunderland needed to bolster all areas of their squad in the summer, and with the likes of Granit Xhaka, Nordi Mukiele and Robin Roefs, they certainly did.

However, attacking signings were also required, and that led to the arrival of Marc Guiu on loan from Chelsea.

Previously, Chelsea have had clauses in loan deals requiring them to play regular football, and it would have been the same for the Spaniard at Sunderland.

Of course, after scoring his first goal for the Wearsiders, Guiu’s loan was cut short by Chelsea, after Liam Delap suffered an injury, and at the time, it was disappointing for Sunderland.

However, in hindsight, that has allowed Isidor to be the go-to option for Regis Le Bris this season, and he is a man playing with extreme confidence.

His goal against the Blues was his fourth of the season, and almost none of this would have come to reality had Guiu remained at the Stadium of Light.

Just to add to that, had Guiu not been recalled, Brian Brobbey would not be a Sunderland player, and that assist for Talbi’s winner would never have happened.

Sunderland aren’t just breaking the trend, they’re setting their own

A Liverpool win on Saturday night would change things, but at the time of writing, Sunderland are second in the Premier League, with five wins from nine games.

For a promoted side to have picked up 17 points before the end of October is almost unheard of in the Premier League, and it showcased how well the Wearsiders have adapted.

Sunderland aren’t trying to reinvent themselves to look pretty among the big boys; they’re playing effective, counter-attacking football.

Fans, typically of the big six, refer to it as anti-football, but Sunderland are playing to their strengths and they are coming up trumps because of it.

The scenes at Stamford Bridge were incredible, and it just goes to show how special this club can be when things are going well, and long may that continue.
