Sunderland’s sudden rise to fame in Mexico explained

Sunderland are attracting interest from all around the globe.

Premier League football has brought way more than just optimism to Wearside, though ahead of Sunderland’s clash with Burnley at Turf Moor, those levels are off the charts.

However, the financial aspect, commercial and global interest in the Black Cats has also seen a massive rise ever since they achieved promotion from the Championship.

Now, Sunderland have risen to stardom in Mexico, and it has left a lot of supporters querying as to why.

Sunderland have gained hundreds of thousands of new fans

Sunderland are a well-supported club as it is, and no matter what situation the Black Cats have found themselves in, that has always been the same.

However, now back in the Premier League, the Mackems have many new eyes on their progress, and they are all from Mexico.

The reason? Mexican football account Analistas on X shared a post stating that “Twitter Mexico is getting together to support a random European team this season to throw fans off.”

It’s fair to say they achieved that, with Sunderland’s social media posts now flooded with thousands and thousands of Mexican football fans.

In fact, according to the BBC, the term “Sunderland” has seen a 700 per cent increase on search engines in Mexico.

The original X post received 3.5million views, with the official Sunderland account replying: “Hola, Mexico! We’re proud to have your passion with us this season – Ha’way the Lads!”

Mexico could be set to witness something special in Premier League

Not only will Sunderland fans be optimistic for the season ahead, and rightfully so, with the summer transfer business and opening day result against the Irons.

But it seems as though that feeling will be reciprocated across the world.

Sunderland’s famous Netflix documentary brought a lot of overseas attention to Wearside, though it’s fair to say it was the wrong time to garner interest.

This, however, is a showcase of the work done by Kyril Louis Dreyfus and co to expand across several departments of the club over the last few years, and long may it continue.
