Sunderland’s season has fizzled out, but it isn’t unexpected

Sunderland’s form in 2026 has been average to say the least.

Had someone offered Sunderland the chance to finish 17th in the Premier League and scrape survival on the last day of the season, you’d have snapped their hand off.

But the Black Cats have fared signficantly better than that on their return to the top flight, with survival already achieved, and European football still somewhat in sight.

However, much of that success comes down to the excellent start to the season they had, as opposed to their recent form.

Regis Le Bris’ side have failed to win any of their last three, while having also conceded 10 goals, with a theme emerging.

Sunderland’s form should be a concern

A good season doesn’t exclude you from criticism, which is what Sunderland have deserved as of late.

Back-to-back defeats against Aston Villa and Forest, followed by a 1-1 draw against Wolves, is not the form to be proud of, nor is it the form needed to reach the next level.

The Black Cats have won just five games in 2026, with a total of 19 points accumulated.

Only five teams have picked up fewer points in that period, with both West Ham and Leeds, who are both involved in the relegation battle, having picked up more.

Sunderland stat

If that form was repeated throughout a full campaign, it would see Sunderland finish on 41 points, which could be a number that would have got you relegated this season.

Le Bris has often been scrutinised for his lack of a plan B, and that was the case in the Championship last season, as well as in the latter stages of the Premier League this season.

Sunderland could make ruthless Regis Le Bris call

Does Le Bris deserve the sack? No.

But could he be replaced this summer? It’s a possibility, and not one that should be used as a reflection of the job he has done.

Sunderland have showcased in the past that they are hungry for progression, and if the opportunity emerges to improve on him, they will almost certainly take it

And based on recent form, it shouldn’t be a decision that causes too much surprise if it were to happen.
