Sunderland’s final Premier League position predicted by supercomputer

Relegation concerns are fading each week for Sunderland.

Sunderland secured a point at home to Everton last time out, not only maintaining their unbeaten Stadium of Light run, but also picking up their 18th point of the season

Regis Le Bris has worked wonders to get his side where they are now, and with several players still to return from injury, things are only likely to get better.

Darren Bent has tipped Sunderland for a spot in Europe, while Opta’s supercomputer is slightly less optimistic for the Black Cats.

Survival beckons for Sunderland in new Opta prediction

While Europe would be excellent, that isn’t even on the minds of anyone affiliated with the Black Cats, who remain fixated with surviving in the top flight.

Despite their impressive start to the season, complacency mustn’t creep into their game, as it did in the opening stages of their clash on Monday when Iliman Ndiaye gave Everton a controversial lead.

Typically, 40 points is enough to avoid the drop, and via Opta‘s latest predictions, Sunderland are forecasted to finish on 45.

If so, it would see the Wearsiders finish in 14th, which would be their best league finish since the 2013-14 season, when they finished there with 38 points.

Nottingham Forest are forecasted to occupy the third relegation spot, with a total points tally of 37.

Sunderland are nearly halfway to survival

More often than not, sides coming up from the Championship are tasked with getting to 10 wins and picking up a few draws along the way.

So far, just over a quarter of the way through the season, Sunderland already have five, with 1.8 points being picked up per game on average.

As a result of their solid start, they would need just 0.8 points per game for the rest of the season to reach that 40-point total.

On paper, that seems relatively straightforward, but there is still a long way to go yet for the Black Casts, with plenty of twists likely to arrive in the next few months.
