‘Dan Neil next’ as Sunderland spark major optimism with contract news

Sunderland have announced the contract extension for two players who had been linked with a move away.

Ambition was the keyword at the start of the summer for Sunderland, and plenty of that has been shown ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Sunderland will host West Ham in just over 48 hours, and will be hoping that all of their hard work pays off when it comes to the result.

Not only has Regis Le Bris been heavily backed in the transfer market, but the way they have handled contract situations also deserves a lot of praise.

Trai Hume and Trey Ogunsuyi sign new deals at Sunderland

Trai Hume was recently linked with a move to Wolfsburg, but the Northern Ireland international put pen to paper on a new five-year deal with Sunderland.

Added to that, the Mackems announced that Liverpool-linked Trey Ogunsuyi signed a new deal, keeping him at the Stadium of Light until 2028.

Not only are these extensions a massive boost for Sunderland on the pitch, but they also showcase how well Sunderland are actually being run from the top.

In previous years, players like Ogunsuyi would have been sold for pennies, and the very fact that he’s being tied down to a new long-term contract is a statement of intent from the Black Cats.

Dan Neil needs to be next at Sunderland

Dan Neil’s future became clear last week when the 23-year-old stated that he would be staying at Sunderland for the forthcoming season.

That is a boost, but the lack of certainty over his own contract situation is a slight concern.

With the midfield free to negotiate a free transfer abroad in six months, it is crucial that Sunderland get him tied down to a new deal as well.
