Sunderland youngsters can make statement of intent as Dortmund announcement made

Sunderland are on a run of losses in pre-season and will be aiming to bag a win before the Premier League campaign starts.

Regis Le Bris’ side suffered a 1-0 loss to Real Betis in their most recent match, extending their losing streak to four.

However, there were positives as Granit Xhaka impressed for Sunderland against what must be considered a strong opponent.

Now, the Black Cats have made a statement of intent after the announcement regarding their Under-21 team.

Sunderland academy make fixture announcement

Sporting CP represented a strong opponent for Sunderland in pre-season as the North East club prepare for the Premier League.

While that encounter ended in defeat, it has been beneficial for the players to share the pitch with quality opposition.

Now, the Under-21 team are set to follow a similar narrative as they prepare for a competition of their own.

That is because they will be facing Athletic Club, Borussia Dortmund, RSC Anderlecht and Sporting CP in the Premier League International Cup.

The announcement was made by SAFC Academy on X (4 August), with the youth team set to take on Europe’s elite.

It has been organised by the Premier League in order to give top-tier academy teams exposure against European youth sides.

The competition will feature 32 teams, with 16 Premier League sides and 16 invited European academies.

Now, the Black Cats’ young hopefuls can excel further as they will be able to test themselves against quality opposition.

European football is not something the Wearsiders have experienced for some time, but this is great preparation for the under-21s.

While Sunderland have spent significantly in this window, there will be a time when youth needs to be blooded at the Stadium of Light.

Now, they have the perfect opportunity to thrive on a grander stage.
