Sunderland wonderkid Chris Rigg earns yet another accolade
Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg has been named as the EA Sports FC Young Player of the Month.
The accolade comes eight days after Rigg was also named as the club’s goal of the month winner due to his incredible backheel goal against Middlesbrough earlier in the season.
His high level of performance at the age of just 17 has earned him recognition as a future England star amid rumoured interest from several European clubs.
Rigg was announced as the winner on Friday (18 October) morning in a post on X by the EFL.
Chris Rigg needs to be managed by Sunderland
When a young player breaks into the first team like Rigg has, hype is immediately through the roof and on this occasion, it is warranted. However, the club have to be able to keep the talented youngster grounded or risk his potential fall away. That goes for Rigg himself as well.
Once a player earns as much attention as he has, the level of pressure can increase drastically and in some cases lead to the unfortunate trait of arrogance.
Rigg has the makings to be a future star for England and appears destined for the very top of football. A sentiment that was echoed in a recent interview by Kristjaan Speakman.
Jobe Bellingham found himself in a similar position last campaign where he ended up facing criticism for a drop in performance levels when in reality, he was burnt out.
Sunderland can’t allow that to happen with Rigg and with many other midfield options such as Alan Browne and Dan Neil as well as another highly rated teen in Milan Aleksic, Regis Le Bris has the ability to rotate and rest where appropriate.
In other Sunderland news, Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor has seemingly taken well to life on Wearside and his latest Instagram post has further showcased his desire to learn about the club.
