Mel Reay's Sunderland side face Newcastle United this Sunday (13 October) in a game that looks set to break the Barclays Women's Championship attendance record.

According to the club's official website, over 12,000 supporters are expected to be at the Stadium of Light this weekend as Sunderland hope to kickstart their season against their local rivals.

The previous record stood at 11,137 when Sheffield United women faced off against London City Lionesses in November 2022.

Talking on the club channels ahead of the game, SAFC Women General Manager, Alex Clark, said: "We are delighted with the support shown to the team and looking forward to welcoming a league-record crowd to the Stadium of Light in what promises to be a great occasion both for the Club and for the North East."

Not the best start for Sunderland Women

Sunderland Women have endured a difficult start to the season so far with just one win in their opening four league fixtures, two of which ended in defeat.

Having just lost five times throughout last season, Reay's side have much more to offer than has been on show thus far.

With that said, Reay's side have picked up their form in recent weeks, unbeaten in the last three in all competitions despite what was deemed as a "disappointment" by Reay when Sunderland drew 3-3 against Charlton Athletic last weekend (6 October) who at the time boasted a 100 per cent record in league action.

A win for Sunderland would do the club the world of good in terms of building momentum and would bring Reay's side level on points with Newcastle behind them on just goal difference. Not only on the pitch but also off it with an impressive performance potentially the key to increasing regular attendance as the club hope to build on last season's third-place finish.
