Mel Reay makes ‘tough’ admission after Sunderland Women win v Blackburn

Sunderland Women made it three wins from three against Blackburn Rovers with Mel Reay describing it as a “tough game”.

Ella West, 17, made her league debut for the club, while Katie Kitching got her fourth goal in three games on Sunday (10 November).

Sunderland Women took the lead through Kitching before being pegged back just before half-time but a 73rd-minute winner from Eleanor Dale secured another huge three points in what Reay described as a “tough game”.

Speaking to the club channels after the game (10 November), she said: “Really pleased, really big three points. Three wins on the bounce for us.

“It was always going to be a tough game and that’s exactly what it was. We had moments of quality which has eventually got the result over the line for us.”

Sunderland Women need to carry momentum forward

Given what was a poor start to the season, it was crucial that the Black Cats found their feet soon enough and they have appeared to have done so with an impressive run of victories.

Three wins from three is exactly what Reay’s side needed and the momentum gained needs to be utilised throughout the remainder of the season.

There have been little doubts about the quality of the squad, but more so regarding their ability to string a consecutive number of performances together although that looks to have changed now.

Kitching, with four goals in three games, has showcased her excellent form and she will play a crucial role in ensuring the Wearsiders can continue this run.

It is now just one defeat in their last seven encounters in all competitions for Reay’s side, albeit that defeat coming in a Tyne-Wear Derby but the signs of improvement are certainly there and optimism levels among the squad will no doubt be rising.
