Sunderland want star with ‘great potential’ as Abdul Fatawu update drops

Sunderland have been keen to add another forward to their roster before 1 September.

The Black Cats have been exploring whether a move for Leicester winger Abdul Fatawu is viable.

Sunderland announced themselves to the Premier League in a stunning 3-0 victory at the Stadium of Light. New signing Granit Xhaka shone for the Black Cats, but Regis Le Bris’ side are still keen to add another recruit before the window closes.

With a couple of weeks to go until September hits, it’s now a race against the clock to get pen to paper.

Sunderland want Adam Daghim as Fatawu alternative

The Black Cats have made their interest in Fatawu known but are not believed to have made a formal bid.

It was always going to be difficult for Sunderland to get Fatawu off Leicester City’s hands. The 21-year-old is considered one of the Foxes’ most valuable assets, and a deal would have been a miracle.

As reported by Pete O’Rourke via X on Wednesday, 20 August, Sunderland are unlikely to pursue a move for Leicester winger Fatawu after exploring a potential deal.

The Black Cats are now looking at attacking alternatives and are keen on a move for versatile Red Bull Salzburg forward Adam Daghim.

Former Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders, who currently manages RB Salzburg, had the highest of praise for Daghim recently.

He said: “Adam has great potential. I don’t like to single out individual players but he has ability, he is quick, he is very committed and has a big heart. He works for the team.”

This is not the first time that Daghim has made headlines for Sunderland. But it seems the Premier League side are now prepared to step on the gas.

With their second league fixture against Burnley on the horizon, the Black Cats will want this signing over the line soon.

Should Sunderland end their pursuit of Fatawu?

The signing of Daghim makes sense if Fatawu is abandoned completely, as it seems unlikely that Sunderland would bring them both in.

He could contribute raw pace, technical skill and creativity to Sunderland.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

It seems Sunderland could have gotten a potential gem in Fatawu if the transfer materialised. But his ACL injury sparks cause for concern. It is difficult to say whether he will get back to his best, although he has shown promising signs for Leicester this season.

Despite this, with the talent at their disposal, the Black Cats should survive missing out on this one.
