Off the back of Sunderland’s 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace, the Mackems return to Premier League action this weekend.

Aston Villa are the opponents this time round on 21 September, with Unai Emery’s side yet to find the back of the net in a competitive fixture.

Regis Le Bris‘ side have a 100 per cent win rate at home so far this season, and will be looking to maintain that against the Villans.

Sunderland underdogs once again for Aston Villa clash

Sunderland remain among the favourites for relegation this season, so to see them labelled as the underdogs in every game will come as no surprise.

However, as shown by Sunderland’s win against Brentford last time out at the Stadium of Light, being the underdog often favours their way of playing.

‘The table never lies’ is a common saying in football, though on this occasion, it might, given the quality that Villa have in their side.

As a result, Emery’s side are favourites for Sunday’s game according to the Opta supercomputer, with a 54.6 per cent chance of winning.

The Black Cats have just a 23 per cent likelihood of taking all three points, though they certainly have it within them to secure another home win.

Sunderland record vs Aston Villa

These two sides have faced off against each other on 184 occasions dating back to 1890, with the Villans by far having the better record.

Aston Villa have won 83 times and lost just one of the last 12 encounters against Sunderland.

Sunderland’s last win arrived in 2016, when a brace from Jermain Defoe and an own goal from Micah Richards earned a 3-1 win for the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light.

Before that, it was five years ago that the Black Cats picked up three points against Villa, showcasing the task at hand this weekend.
