Sunderland U21 star Ben Crompton shares ‘most important thing’ after injury return
Sunderland’s Under-21 defender Ben Crompton has reflected on his return to the side amid previous injury troubles.
The Black Cats were able to secure their fifth straight victory with a 3-0 win over Norwich on Saturday, 26 October.
Crompton, a defender by trade, was on the scoresheet twice, capping off a fine performance for a player who has struggled with injuries recently.
Speaking after the game, in a post on SAFC Academy’s X account, Crompton said: “Good evening. Obviously, three points. A clean sheet and two goals so, mental really.
“For me now, the minutes are the most important thing. It’s nice for the team to win as well but I think on a personal level it’s just about getting my minutes in and getting good performances in. Hopefully trying to progress and move forward now.”
Sunderland Under-21 side have found their form
Despite a poor start to the season, there were never any doubts about the quality in the Sunderland youth side. Under the stewardship of Graeme Murty, the Black Cats had a successful season last campaign with many players tipped to make it into the first team.
A slow start to this campaign somewhat halted that progress but they are back on track and have started to get the results that their performances deserve.
A 3-0 win over Norwich is the club’s fifth in a row. With wins against Lyon and Derby, Murty’s side have started to gather momentum which is crucial for a side wanting to achieve success.
The squad has lost some key players this season, with Tommy Watson finding himself more involved with the first team and Caden Kelly leaving on loan. However, the players remaining have bags of ability and it is starting to be seen again.

As for Crompton himself, his performance against Norwich was excellent and it is no surprise as to how he’s found himself in and around the first-team squad this season.
His full return from injury hopefully spells the end of his sideline woes and the start of a successful campaign for other Black Cats.
In other Sunderland news, the club are facing backlash from supporters for re-releasing retro clothing that was deemed to be limited edition.
