Henderson to make Sunderland decision in weeks as Fabrizio Romano shares new update

Sunderland will soon find out if midfield target Jordan Henderson will be available this summer.

The Black Cats sealed promotion to the Premier League following a dramatic win at Wembley in the Championship play-off final.

Manager Regis Le Bris is already preparing for life in the top division, eyeing potential targets to help boost survival chances for next season.

Ajax captain Jordan Henderson to make a decision on future soon

Jordan Henderson is one player who has been linked with a sensational return to the Stadium of Light.

The England international was at Wembley to watch his former side beat Sheffield United, sparking rumours of a potential reunion.

Taking to X (27 May), Fabrizio Romano has now reported that Henderson will make up his mind on his future “this month” and that he “has interest from Premier League and Serie A”.

He added that the 34-year-old also has an option to extend his contract with Ajax, who narrowly missed out on the Eredivisie title this year.

This option appears unlikely, with Henderson reportedly only wanting to stay at the Dutch giants if manager Francesco Farioli remained.

The Italian coach has since departed Ajax, so a return to Sunderland is still on the cards for Henderson, who left the club in 2011.

Henderson would be a perfect fit in midfield

The former Liverpool captain would be shrewd business for Le Bris as he looks to keep the club up next season.

Henderson has a wealth of experience in the Premier League, appearing 431 times and lifting the Reds’ first ever title in 2020.

He has been an integral part of the Ajax team this season and has been named in Thomas Tuchel’s upcoming England squad for games against Andorra and Senegal.

Sunderland will also be hoping that Henderson can be part of a midfield which may be losing Jobe Bellingham this summer.

Bellingham has been linked with a move to the Bundesliga in recent weeks, with his exit seemingly imminent.

Henderson isn’t the only former Back Cat to be rumoured to return to the Stadium of Light for next season.

Manchester United forward Amad Diallo could be set for a shock move to Sunderland as they look to bolster their survival hopes.

The Ivorian spent the 2022/2023 season on loan on Wearside and would be a major coup if the signing could be pulled off.
