Sunderland transfer news as Mason Cotcher prepares to undergo Aston Villa medical

Mason Cotcher is set to undergo a medical with Aston Villa ahead of a move from Sunderland, according to The Telegraph.

The newspaper reported online (8 August) that the England Under-17 striker is set to undergo his medical at Villa Park on Friday 9 August.

A package has been agreed between the two clubs for Cotcher. Other formalities involved in the deal are expected to be finalised over the weekend.

Mason Cotcher to swap Sunderland for Aston Villa

Cotcher is no doubt a talented player with the potential to become a top striker in English football. However, it appears that he will not be fulfilling that potential at the Stadium of Light.

In just 27 appearances for the Sunderland Under-18s, the forward scored nine goals and provided one assist. Furthermore, what is most impressive is that those goals all came before the player had celebrated his 17th birthday.

Therefore, the Black Cats would have certainly been keen to keep hold of the player. However, that does not appear as though it was a possibility.

Cotcher has been without a club for the past year and has been on trial with the likes of Arsenal and Leeds United, featuring and scoring for both of the club’s youth sides.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (2 August), Cotcher has been training with Villa’s youth squad and impressing with his displays.

As a result, it is no surprise that the club have made a move for him.

Therefore, the Mackems will just be glad to receive a bit of compensation for a talented young player they never looked likely to keep hold of.
