Sunderland ‘to pay full price’ for Xhaka despite Leverkusen pressure – Exclusive
Sunderland are believed to have reached an agreement in principle for the signing of Granit Xhaka.
Optimism levels reached an all-time high on Wearside on Tuesday (22 July) when it was revealed that Sunderland had reached an agreement with Xhaka.
The 32-year-old has thrived in the Bundesliga and played an influential role in Leverkusen’s success over the last few seasons, leaving many to question whether the initial links were genuine.
However, Xhaka has made it clear that he wants to move back to the Premier League, but it may not be enough to budge the demands set by Leverkusen.

Leverkusen under pressure after Xhaka request
Xhaka has made his feelings clear; he wants the move to Sunderland with a chance to showcase he still has what it takes for Premier League football.
However, Bundesliga expert Kevin Hatchard believes Leverkusen will stick to their demands, which were believed to have been set at around £17million.
Speaking exclusively to Mackem News, he said: “Looks like the deal will happen, although Bayer wanted to keep him. On that basis, and given that they are pretty tough negotiators, I don’t see Sunderland getting much of a discount.

“He was hugely important to their league and cup double the other season. His leadership, an ability to keep the midfield moving by avoiding pressure, and a goal threat from long range.
“He has played with much more maturity at Leverkusen than earlier in his career. Still plays on the edge, but has learned to control himself for the good of the team. In terms of character and leadership, a fantastic signing should it go through.”

Sunderland would benefit massively from Xhaka’s arrival
First and foremost, Xhaka is a very good footballer.
The Swiss international finished 16th in the Ballon d’Or rankings last year and has consistently shown his ability at the top level.
However, his leadership and experience are what will benefit Sunderland the most if they can get this one over the line at the Stadium of Light.
