Sunderland ‘to aim higher’ amid latest Aaron Ramsdale update

Sunderland are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.

The Black Cats have already made significant progress in the summer transfer window, with six new arrivals already at the Stadium of Light.

Simon Adingra was the latest one, with three of the other five coming in to bolster the midfield options that Regis Le Bris will have.

Next on the list is a goalkeeper, and Sunderland could be risking ridicule after the latest news.

Aaron Ramsdale linked with Sunderland move

Marcin Bulka was an initial target for the Black Cats, but opted for a move to Neom instead, before Djordje Petrovic began closing in on a move to Bournemouth.

As a result, Ramsdale has now emerged as a target for the Black Cats, alongside Wolves’ Sam Johnstone, according to Alex Crook via X (10 July).

First and foremost, the latter would be a poor signing for several reasons at Sunderland, while there would also be reservations about the former.

Ramsdale fell back into the Championship alongside Southampton last season, and while he may be seen as an initial upgrade on Anthony Patterson, there is no reason why the Wearsiders cannot aim higher, given the level of ambition they have shown so far.

Sunderland still have work to do

Based on the business so far, those making the decisions at Sunderland have certainly earned some time and trust from supporters.

However, they will be fully aware that the recruitment task is far from over, with several more additions still needed ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Signing a striker will be another area that is high up on the list of priorities, as will the addition of a top-quality centre-back.

Sunderland’s pre-season schedule gets underway on Saturday (12 July), and Le Bris will be hoping to get as much time with his squad as possible.
