Sunderland to ‘accelerate Jordan Henderson signing’ after significant transfer update
Sunderland were always going to be linked with a move for Jordan Henderson after securing promotion to the Premier League.
The midfielder came through the Wearside academy before sealing a switch to Liverpool in 2011.
Now, there is talk of a return to the Stadium of Light after Henderson watched Sunderland win the Championship play-offs.
With Henderson’s Ajax future in doubt, there has been an important update regarding the 35-year-old’s next move.

Sunderland face stiff competition to land Henderson
Ajax are prepared to let Henderson leave for free this summer despite the midfielder having a year left on his contract.
The former Liverpool man made 28 appearances in the Eredivisie last season as the Amsterdam outfit let the title slip through their fingers.
Jordan Henderson’s 2024/25 Eredivisie statistics | Total |
Appearances (starts) | 28 (21) |
Goals | 1 |
Assists | 4 |
Touches | 69.2 |
Accurate passes | 51.7 (87%) |
Big chances created | 8 |
However, the central-midfielder is not believed to be a part of new manager Johnny Heintinga’s plans, hence he is allowed to leave.
While Sunderland are favourites to sign Henderson, they may want to accelerate that after the latest news.
That is because Nottingham Forest and Marseille are keen to sign Henderson, according to the Daily Mail (24 June).
The outlet states the duo are keeping a close eye on the Ajax man, alongside others on the continent.
With the 35-year-old back in Thomas Tuchel’s England plans, he faces a pivotal decision this summer.

Black Cats risk missing out on Henderson if they wait too long
While it seemed that the Black Cats might have a free run on their former player, their path is no longer so clear.
Nottingham Forest and Marseille will both be playing European football next season and, therefore, present a higher standard of football.
However, it is uncertain whether the midfielder would slot straight into either side, given their quality.
If he moved back to the Stadium of Light, then a route to first-team Premier League football would be clearer.
Given his vast experience and leadership, Henderson would be a shrewd acquisition for whoever signs him.
If that is to be Sunderland, then they must move into fifth gear to steer him back home.
